INCOMUNICADO - Daniel Gutiérrez Adán
10 September - 30 October
Solitary confinement Daniel Gutiérrez Adán’s proposals always keep a very special and harmonious tension between the metaphorical depth, the deep meaning of his works, and their extraordinary and subtle aesthetic display. It's not in vain that we are talking about an artist of indisputable firmness and trajectory, who is indeed solid and coherent, as well as innovative and persistent in the research on new ways of expression. He always works in a direct way, face to face with the medium, without middlemen. That’s the way it’s been in his relationship with sculpture, objects and installation, as with photography and video over these past years. To research, to understand the essence of the tools, in order to make them speak in multiple directions. In his project Silent from 2007, we face a radical conceptual and formal proposal carried out so perfectly on issues concerning the human condition and double standards, creating multiple rooms and atmospheres of meaning. So, Gutiérrez Adán is a creator of real metaphors-atmospheres. Everything about him is credible because it’s authentic, there is no fiction. As the best poets, his works-lines spring from the soul, from its doubts and its certainties, from its convictions, indignation and joy, from its dialogue and coexistence with the World, but through the stoic and assumed experience of solitude. As a narrator of existence he wish to leave no empty spaces or holes through which the most abominable conduct of an apparently communicated, egoistic and self-indulgent society and civilisation might fall into oblivion. Against fallacy the artist confronts photographs, video and objects in which the pressure of the truth contained in their formal serenity leaves them on the verge of an emotional impact. Poems of vast meaning, lines on the verge of anguish, that move us in what never is an indifferent contemplation of his works and that question from multiple angles the meaning of existence. His last project, developed for Galería Nuble, is an open proposal on communication and lack of communication in our contemporary society and world. It’s an existential symphony with a perfectly balanced score where luminous objects, videos and photographs intervene. The welcoming and the prelude to his project are made up by the circular projection, on one of the walls above the access stairs to the gallery, of a video loop in which a person is dancing at floor level. By an illuminated sign we can later make out or guess the word “incomunicados” plur. isolated, cut off that will be talking to another illuminated sign that suggests that we transcend the communication barriers through a “vamos” we go; let’s go, come on. Another video will let us watch in a blurry way a person in a room, undressing in solitude. Daniel Gutiérrez Adan´s work is without doubt an open invitation to silent and bare contemplation, and by this experience our own projections on life and human condition will come through with enormous poetic intensity. A broken female hand, fractured and forgotten by the violence and possessive injustice, is clutching a dreamt wire aeroplane. The red tears have painted the wooden nails of pain in carmine. “Un millón de noches” / "A million nights" is the title of this photograph, a desperate song dedicated to women who live in fear and solitude, who count the nights in order to see themselves wake up… “La cuneta blanca” ("The white ditch") displays a breakwater of white cubes, with the same letter tattooed on its six sides. With these letters, in a random combination carried out by the sea of time, you could construct the names and the places of those who are abandoned by History. “Si no estás” ("If you are not there"). Perhaps we might also enunciate this photograph as “What to do without you?” The fear of being left alone, of being cut off by the breakdown of a fragile and unstable wax lintel-life printed on photographic paper by the shutter of the artist’s analogue Hasselblad. In this case the opening, the void, is paradoxically a hopeful room. “En este roto” (”In this hole”) you could write the saddest lines in the fragility of a boat sailing the most unstable oceans and seas of life, but on this occasion the artist leads us towards a path of light and hope once more. The boat is coming back; it's heading towards us, maybe to offer us a second chance to re-conduct ourselves. Duality as a basic principle of definition of reality or of human behaviour is common to most cultures. Good versus evil, joy versus sadness, drama versus comedy... In "El otro costado” ("The other side"), the artist proposes an object, a space-tunnel in motion, in opposite to the stillness of the surrounding landscape. Here is another invitation to enter the other side of things, of the human being and of thought. Our brief and intense walk through his works concludes in silence, the mind positively stirred and as always, we are not indifferent. Orlando Britto Jinorio
